As
I have for many years hence, I set onto this paper the words
of my experience: A preservation of the knowledge I have had
the fortune (good and bad) to learn. Here I will discuss the
Spiritual and Religious matters of the known world. I feel
privy to make an unbiased factual judgement, having seen all
sides of matters as these, perhaps in a more personal fashion
than I would desire. This is what I know.
THE GODS OF THE REALMS
The people of the known world believe and worship in three
main deities. Though some are known by more than one name,
I will refer to them by the most common here.
Gaina
~ Goddess of Beginnings, Creation, and Rebirth
Gaina, the Heavenly Creator, the first of the three gods.
She created the warmth of the sun and the earth, as well
as love, compassion, and life itself. Gaina is worshiped
by most of the Realms as a holy benefactress, a protector,
and a healer. The Priesthood of Gaina are closest to the
goddess, able to divine healing and miracles from her blessing.
Gate ~ God of Middles, Change, and Revolution
Gate, the Wind of Change, the second god. Gate created time
and the changing seasons. He is also responsible for power
and desire, and the random happenings of Chance. Those who
worship him tend to be on the fringes of social order: the
travelers, adventurers, and gamblers; those in power over
it: Noblemen and the Wealthy; or those who want to change
it: the revolutionaries and the war leaders. Most noteworthy
of his worshippers are those of the various Wizard Guilds.
These small, secretive organizations are granted the power
to change the world about them through their devotion and
studies.
Sennah ~ Goddess of Ends, the Unseen, and
Death
Sennah, Harbinger of Death, the third god. This Goddess
is appropriately enigmatic as the creator of the night,
the cold of winter, and the dark secrets that lie at the
heart of men. Her most infamous role, though, is the ender
of life. Only those tortured souls begging for death, or
the hopelessly insane, dare pray to the Goddess of Ends.
Beyond this, little else is ever spoken of the third Goddess.
THE AFTERLIFE
Though the belief in another life after death is a commonly
held one, the exact details differ among believers.
Followers of Gaina believe that living a life of love and
compassion will open the doors to a holy, better world under
the kind hands of Gaina, while those tainted by evil are doomed
to an eternal death. In recent years, I've found that the
Church continues to add more and more ludicrous restrictions
to reach this supposed paradise...such is the cause of my
distrust in it. But I digress.
Though many followers of Gate also believe in this ideal afterlife,
the requirements to get there deal more with ones actions
than simple beliefs and devotions. To achieve this ideal place,
one must fulfill their potential in the material world. Failure
to do so results in a "rebirth" after death to try
again. Those who misuse their potential are doomed to an eternally
dark hereafter.
However, there are those who believe in far more sinister
ways to attain eternal life. I refuse to discuss the details
of these beliefs here. They are better left hidden in the
dark. They are, however, closely related to the following
section.
THE SPIRITWORLD
The existence of spirits and ghosts is often debated and little
understood. Some explain them away as monsters. Followers
of Gaina claim they are torturous, lost souls that need to
be sought out and banished from existence. Followers of Gate
often believe that spirits are the transitory states of those
to be reincarnated.
However, there are other beings that go past mere spirits,
those that are not living or dead...The so-called "undead."
What allows such horrific creatures to exist is beyond even
my vast knowledge...perhaps only the Gods know. The Goddess
of Ends in particular may hold the key to these hellish unending
lives, but I will cease my speculations here.
